Telling My Story Instructions
One of the most exciting stories that a follower of Jesus will ever tell is the one of how he or she came to trust Jesus as their savior. An important part of growing and a great way to encourage others involves sharing your story.
Here are some tips for telling your story:
(1) Before you begin writing, pray for God to give you wisdom, guidance and clarity. Don't worry about making it dramatic or exciting. Just be honest, clear and focused on Jesus. Be confident that God will use what you say to encourage others.
(2) Write out your story beforehand using the Telling My Story Form (click to access our downloadable PDF file). You may end up rewriting your story a couple times in an effort to find the right words and the right way of putting them together so that you will be clearly understood. (numbers 3, 4, 5 and 6 below are on the Telling My Story Form)
(3) Section #1 - Contact information: Please fill out completely.
(4) Section #2 - My Life Before Jesus: Give enough details so that your story reflects specifically what happened to you. Avoid using unrelated information or inappropriate material.
(5) Section #3 - How You Came to Trust Jesus as Savior: Say enough about Jesus so that those who are listening will have a clear idea of how God worked in your life. Also, since there may be folks listening to you who do not know Jesus, give enough details so a person can know how to put their trust in Jesus as Savior. When talking about the time when you prayed to receive (or placed your trust in) Jesus, think about including one or more of the following key concepts:
I realized I was a sinner separated from God...
I understood that Jesus died for me and paid the penalty for my sins...
(6) Section #4 - Your Life Since Trusting in Jesus as Savior: Share how God has worked in your life since you became a follower of Jesus, e.g., how God helped you overcome a bad habit, gave you peace in your life, etc.
A final note: please do not tell your story in your own strength. Let God use you as you prepare and as you share. Think about 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 as you get ready.
We are excited to hear about how God has changed your life. May God give you courage and a deeper understanding of His grace as you follow Him.
