Isaiah 9:6-7
Pastor Dennis Keating
(for Scripture references and fill-in the blanks)
“For the LORD your God is the God of gods and the Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God;” Deuteronomy 10:17
“Who is the King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, The LORD mighty in battle.” Psalm 24:8
THE MAIN POINT: Jesus has the power of divine might. (See Colossians 2:9; Matthew 28:18)
“For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form . . .” Colossians 2:9
“All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.” Matthew 28:18
5 Insights
He is able:
1. To restore those under judgment. (See Isaiah 9:1)
--> God doesn’t condemn us to a life of continuing failure. (See John 8:10-11, NIV)
“Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you? ‘No one, sir,’ she said. Then neither do I condemn you, Jesus declared. Go now and leave your life of sin.” John 8:10-11, NIV
2. To enlighten those who are confused. (See Isaiah 9:2; Mark 5:15; Psalm 119:130)
“. . . sitting down, clothed and in his right mind;” Mark 5:15
“The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple;” Psalm 119:130 - KJV
3. To release those who are enslaved. (See Isaiah 9:3)
4. To strengthen those who are weak. (See Psalm 18:31-32; Isaiah 40:28-29)
“For who is God, but the LORD? And who is a rock, except our God, the God who girds me with strength and makes my way blameless?” Psalm 18:31-32
“Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth does not become weary or tired. His understanding is inscrutable. He gives strength to the weary, and to him who lacks might He increases power.” Isaiah 40:28-29
5. To fulfill His promises. (See Nehemiah 9:32)
“Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who keeps covenant and lovingkindness . . .” Nehemiah 9:32
THE POINT: Jesus is strong enough to make and keep big promises. (See Jeremiah 32:17)
“Ah Lord GOD! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm! Nothing is too difficult for You.” Jeremiah 32:17
How do we accept it?
--> Admit your weakness. (See 2 Corinthians 12:9; 1 Peter 5:5-6)
“My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9
“God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time.” 1 Peter 5:5-6
--> Pray for insight. (See Ephesians 1:18-19; Colossians 1:11)
“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe.” Ephesians 1:18-19
“. . . strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for the attaining of all steadfastness and patience.” Colossians 1:11
--> Practice what is right.
THE PRINCIPLE: Power arrives as I take a step of faith.
--> Boast about the Lord! (See Jeremiah 9:23-24; 2 Corinthians 12:9)
“Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; 24 but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD who exercises lovingkindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things,” declares the LORD.” Jeremiah 9:23-24
“Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9
