“But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” (2 Corinthians 4:7-9)

Sitting at the stoplight with two young kids in the backseat, when the light turned green I — like always — put my foot on the gas. But the car didn’t move. For a split second I thought something was wrong with the engine. But only for a second.

Suddenly I saw a car racing through the red light right in front of us with a police car in hot pursuit. If I had succeeded in driving when the light turned green, I’m fairly certain I wouldn’t be here to share this story. I can only explain it as a spiritual intervention kept me and my young kids from being struck by that speeding car racing through the intersection. After the shock of what just happened, this verse rose to the forefront of my brain: “You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me,” (Psalm 139:5). Truly, he had laid his hand upon us, and hemmed us in behind and before. The Contemporary English Version says, “and with your powerful arm you protect me from every side.” Truly God had protected us.

Most times we probably don’t even see the hand of God at work. But at other times he allows a glimpse of his amazing power and divine intervention so we can give him praise.

How have you seen God’s protection in your life? Share the story with a friend and spend time praising God for being your protector.
